Stop & Shop
If you are from Massachusetts, chances are you’ve heard of or bought your groceries at Stop & Shop. But have you noticed the different iterations of their logo over the years? They’ve been around since 1914 and have kept it pretty consistent for the most part…except for the times they didn’t 👀. We love nerding out on all the different lewks. Tell us which version got it right.
Shaw’s
A major Stop & Shop competitor is Shaw’s. Where there is one, the other is not far away. Growing up in Massachusetts, we used to regularly hit both stores on a typical grocery run because they were just in the plaza across the street from each other but never managed to run the same sales 🤔. Shaw’s is such a steady Eddie as far as their logo, but we’re still confused about the role of Star Market to this day. They would often sell items with Star Market price stickers at Shaw’s and vice versa. If there was ever any significant concept difference, we never really caught on, did you?
Market Basket
Market Basket. The brand is strong with this one. We never said it had to be pretty to work. No frills and all the dills, um deals! From the low-tech pricing stickers and signs, to the sawdust on the floors, to that simple red font logo they’ve been using since at least 1962. It’s no surprise that this is still a family-owned operation (not without the family drama) that remembers its working-class roots originating in Lowell, MA. The focus is low prices, authentic quality, and great selection of international foods. Their brand is the definition of “if it ain’t broke.” Tell us you’ve been to Market Basket without telling us you’ve been to Market Basket.
